From 1990 the CLOB was created until the onset of Asian Financial Crisis 1997-1998. Malaysia imposed capital control in September 1998. One can say that prior to the 90s, KLSE and SES acted as though both were a single market. Hence when KLSE splitted with SES 50% of the stock of Malaysian companies was delisted from SES compared to 11% of Singapore company in KLSE. The CLOB for the 112 malaysian companies shares used to be traded in SES, reached RM 17b (SGD 7.5b) by 1999 with about 172k Singaporean investors.
In 1999 CPF hold about RM 3b for those West Malaysian who has returned to Malaysia. East Malaysian are free to withdraw their CPF monies when they return to Sabah and Sarawak. West Malaysian can only withdraw the money once they reach 55 years old.
